FINALMENTE! By God’s grace, we finally made it to Milan! This came only two days after I was installed at Escondido URC as a missionary. We arrived on November 21. The following Sunday, the congregation of Chiesa Riformata ‘Filadelfia,’ which I will be serving as their minister, warmly welcomed us with a fellowship meal and festivities.
On Sunday, December 2, the first Sunday of Advent, I preached on Luke 1:26-38. This text was very timely because Saturday, December 8 is the national holiday Immacolata Concezione, which is the day the country is called to remember the “Immaculate Conception,” the Roman Catholic doctrine that Mary was sinless. I explained how the Bible teaches that Mary was a recipient of grace, not a giver of grace. Mary indeed is the most blessed among women on earth, for she was chosen by God to be the mother of the Christ. But, like us, she was a sinner in need of a Savior. The good news Mary received from the angel Gabriel in Luke 1 is also good news for us, for, like Mary, we too are the recipients of grace if we put our trust in Christ.
This was the first time I preached in Italian since August 2017. The Lord was gracious and helped me tremendously. I am convinced that many people - including those reading this update - have been praying for us a lot. Thank you! We are very grateful for your prayers!
We have also been searching for an apartment to rent and a school for Iain to attend. We believe we have found the right school, but we are still looking for the right home. It has been more difficult than we expected. In the meantime, we are staying in a tiny one-bedroom short-term rental. We trust that the Lord will provide a good place for us. We ask for your prayers about this, as well as the many bureaucratic challenges we face. There are a number of hoops we must still jump through in order to gain residency in Italy.
We also ask you to continue to pray for our language skills and, above, that Christ would be made known and many disciples would be made.
