This is the primary way in which the apostles applied the Great Commission of our Lord. Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:18-20). The apostles sought to fulfill this commission not only by preaching the gospel and making converts, but also by planting churches where those converts could be made disciples through Christ’s gracious means of Word and Sacrament (Acts 2:41-42; 14:23). Without the local church, there is no Christianity. We must, therefore, plant churches that preach the gospel boldly, administer the sacraments faithfully, and provide loving, pastoral church discipline. Our plan is to plant three to five congregations within one denomination that is self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating. Our plan is to plant three to five congregations, forming one denomination that is self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating. This denomination shall be called le Chiese Riformate in Italia (CRI), or in English, the Reformed Churches in Italy.
The apostle Paul said, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:13-15). The missionaries involved with Reformation Italy are ordained ministers in the United Reformed Churches in North America.
