Interesting article, thank you. Sola scriptura sounds so matter-of-fact, until you start looking at the details. I just uncovered Iranaeus' idea of regula fidei the other day, and still haven't quite got my head wrapped around the two ideas (sola scriptura and regula fidei). But, that's what makes the journey fun--slogging through until it makes sense.

Blessings, and more articles, please!

Comment on Anti-Catholicism: The Good, the Bad, and the Un-Christian by Donald Philip Veitch

Darryl:

1. Fortunately, I had an excellent father who reared me on Romanism as a Confessional Protestant and with theological reasons to oppose it. Dad had serious exposure to old Princeton and classical Anglicanism. Some great names fell to my ears at the dinner table as a lad. But, what did I know? In later years, the names stuck. At age 18, Dad handed me Berkhok and Hodge, saying, "Read 10 pages a day with 5 chapters from the OT and 5 from the NT daily atop your other studies" (undergrad: chem engg'). I complied, adding others.

2. Since living in Italy in the mid-1990's (about 3 years), I've read a fair amount about Popedom--by their own authors, including all of JP2 and B16's writings. Clerical ignorance, I suspect, is widespread amongst the pseudo-evangelicals (non-Confessional evangelicals).

3. As to the larger context in America, it will take some real thinking to assess, assay, and put forward a list to my own eye--at the leadership level, e.g. Rectors, Pastors, Professors, etc.--a list of those who "get it," not just as theological issues, but eviscerally. Dr. Sproul, perhaps, is one strong voice. But who else? Certainly Jim Packer was a large, large embarrassment--a technician of great skill, but a technocrat and not a statesman. While at WTS-P, 79-81, trying to think of "who really got it." Well, Bob Godfrey and Philip Edcumbe Hughes certainly did. Will ponder it. A couple come to mind that, well, I shan't finish it. I don't mind naming names either...am retired and owned by no one. WTS-P was a bike with training wheels in some areas. Thank God for Dr. Hughes.

4. It's revulsing to watching Italians kiss statutes and myriad other matters. Or, to drive through hamlet by hamlet and hear the monthly celebrations and fireworks in honour of that hamlet's patron saint and "protector-invokee" (like these Tractarian Anglicans too). Or, to re-read like Leo X's invocation to Peter and Paul in Ex Surge to destroy Luther. Yet, who cannot fail to see the devastation wrought on that country? Perhaps it's more revulsing to think of ignorance and indifference at the leadership level in the USA?

This just in today from "Rome Reports" at:
http://www.romereports.com/palio/Dictionary-published-with-2600-apparitions-of-the-Virgin-Mary-english-3342.html

All, of course, without correction from the Vatican.

5. This ministry has this scribe's eye and support. May they multiply. May this Confessional Anglican support and return the favour for loaning us Peter Vermigli and Zanchius, of whom Augustus Toplady wrote so affectionately.

Best regards to Rev. Ferrari, the Vestry or Session, and La Chiesa d'Milano.

Dear Rev. Ferrari:

I found you website, as well as the youtube documentary on Reformation Italy. Although they are short clips, they are marvellous, necessary, and most commendable.

I lived in Naples 1997-1999 when with the U.S. military. I've been reading Romanist literature much since then.

I've been playing your clips repeatedly through the day with much encouragement that a Protestant, Reformed, Confessional, Calvinistic and "Truly Catholic Church" has been established in Milan.

I will squirrel a few dollars away and get to you, as able.

Your work is extremely important.

All best regards,
Donald Philip Veitch
Camp Lejeune, NC
USA

PS. Found the Heidelberger in Italian. I once had it memorized in English. Time to "buff up" my Italian and redo the HC in Italian, 2011.

Also, I hope you would publish more youtube clips, both in English and Italian.

Thanks for your article. But, I suspect that one reason for Rome's appeal is that Old Scarlet O'Harlot can act like a grown-up when so much of Evangliicaldom is beset with adolescent goofiness.

For Dr. Hart: I know that you have written extensively about, frankly, some of the flaws and weaknesses of what evangelicalism has become over two-and-a-half centuries in America. And I agree with you that revivalism has not been a helpful historical phenomenon. But I wonder if your writing about Roman Catholicism here and now is just sort of an attempt to close the barn door after the horses have gotten out? Do you have some sense that your own writings may have pushed some unhappy evangelicals in the direction you are warning folks about here?

Good post. In your future posts are you going to deal with the argument that Luther's doctrine of justification was a historical novelty? In my experience it is this question that is most often cited as to why Protestants convert to Eastern Orthodoxy or Roman Catholicism. I think this is something that needs to be systematically treated by Protestants.

What comes to my mind is jesus statement to the pharisees " because of your teachings of men, the word of god is made of no effect"

The jewish scribes and rabbis had the talmud and other creeds of what the torah siad, but they were just that teachings of various men, who assumptions just confused peiople.

Jesus prayed for the unity of the Spirit in gospel of john chapter 17, that his disciples be one , as jesus& his father were one!!
the roman catholic traditonal way of worship, and the greek orthodox traditonal way of worship are not in unity of the Spirit are they??they so different in thier ways of worship& creeds , same for the anglican7 church of england, so creeds have been around along time, but has it made these different forms of godliness united??

1. Excellent, am anticipating them.

2. When it comes to Romanism, I have no Protestant fatigue whatsover. Cranmer at Edward's coronation, to wit, that "God be truly worshipped and idolatry destroyed, the tyranny of the Bishops of Rome banished from your subjects and images removed."

3. Rome is still a lustful tyrant, truth be told.
